Day 20 - Taught by the Spirit

John 14:25-26

Taught by the Holy Spirit

When Jesus told His disciples that the things He was speaking to them while He was with them were important instructions and that the Holy Spirit would teach them all things, He was giving them a message of peace. That is to say, they need not worry about knowing everything all at once, but that they would grow in wisdom and spiritual maturity under the tutelage of the Holy Spirit. It was similar to the reassurance that He gave them when He told them not to worry about what to say when they were dragged before the magistrates and authorities. They could be at peace knowing that the Holy Spirit would teach them in that very hour what they ought to say (Luke 12:11-12). That is blessed assurance indeed.

We can rest in that same assurance. When we take our prayers and supplications to God in prayer, he speaks back to us through His word by the power of the Holy Spirit. This is reemphasized in the Apostle Paul’s letter to the Philippians where he says “Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6-7).”

If we are properly walking in the Spirit rather than the flesh, the Holy Spirit is guiding us to all truth by empowering our prayer lives and leading us in the study of God’s word. Even when we are at a loss as to what to pray, the Holy Spirit is making intercession for us before the throne of almighty God (Romans 8:26).

Today, let us purpose in our hearts to seek the Lord in His word, and in our time of prayer, and submit ourselves to the molding and shaping of the Holy Spirit. If we will do this, the Lord promises that the Holy Spirit will make the word a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path.
